The Best Monitor Light Bars for Small Desks: BenQ, Quntis and Xiaomi Compared (2026)

On a small desk, even a clamp lamp has to go somewhere. A monitor light bar doesn't: it hangs on the top edge of your screen, points its light down and forward onto the keyboard, and is shaped so the light doesn't bounce off the screen into your eyes. It uses no desk space at all, and most of them run off a USB port, so there's no extra plug either. Lighting is one piece of the bigger picture we cover in how to set up a small home office.
We compared five well-reviewed light bars sold on Amazon on the numbers that decide whether one suits a small setup: how long the bar is, how thick a monitor it hangs on, how much desk it lights, and how you control it. Three are from BenQ, which makes the best-known bars; one is Quntis's budget ScreenLinear, and one is Xiaomi's remote-controlled bar. As with all our guides, we haven't tested these hands-on. The specs come from each maker's spec page or Amazon listing, linked below.
TL;DR: Our top picks
- Best overall: BenQ ScreenBar Pro LED Monitor Light Bar (Check current price). Lights a 33.5" x 19.7" area at 500 lux, fits monitors 0.17"–2.56" thick and turns itself on when you sit down; 4.8 stars from 1,300 Amazon ratings.

- Best for 24" monitors: BenQ ScreenBar LED Monitor Light Bar (Check current price). BenQ’s original 17.7" bar, sized for smaller screens, with auto-dimming and USB-A power from almost any monitor or laptop.
- Best with a remote: Xiaomi Mi Computer Monitor Light Bar (Check current price). Wireless 2.4 GHz dial for brightness and color, plus a magnetic head that tilts to keep light off the screen.
- Best premium (dark rooms): BenQ ScreenBar Halo 2 LED Monitor Light Bar (Check current price). Adds a backlight that glows on the wall behind the monitor, and a wireless dial with a display; 4.7 stars from 1,300 ratings.

How to choose a monitor light bar for a small desk
Four checks cover almost every light bar decision. You'll need a tape measure and a look at the top of your monitor.
1. Measure the top edge of your monitor
Light bars hang on a counterweighted clip that grips the front and back of the screen's top edge, so the monitor's thickness there matters. The ranges here go from 0.4–1.2 inches (BenQ's original ScreenBar) to 0.17–2.56 inches (ScreenBar Pro). Thin modern monitors fit everything; older monitors with a thick, rounded back, or screens whose back slopes away from the top edge, are where the narrower clips struggle. Curved monitors need a bar rated for curves: BenQ lists the Pro and Halo 2 for 1000R–1800R curves and the original ScreenBar for 1500R and flatter.
2. Match the bar length to your screen
The bars here are 15.7 to 19.7 inches long. A 24-inch monitor is about 21 inches wide, so a 16- to 18-inch bar sits neatly on top; on a 27-inch screen, a 19.7-inch bar like the ScreenBar Pro or Halo 2 looks better and lights more of the desk. If your monitor is on an arm or a riser, the bar moves with it, so you never have to re-aim the light.
3. Check what it lights
A light bar lights a strip of desk in front of the screen: the keyboard, mouse and a notebook. BenQ publishes the area it lights at 500 lux, a common target for desk work: 23.6" x 11.8" for the original ScreenBar and 33.5" x 19.7" for the Pro and Halo 2. On a desk 40 inches wide or less, the larger figure covers almost the whole working area. If you also read or write on paper off to the side, a light bar alone may not be enough; see light bar vs desk lamp below.
4. Power and controls
All five run on 5V USB, but not all USB ports are equal. The original ScreenBar and Xiaomi need a 1A port, which most monitors and laptops have. The ScreenBar Pro wants up to 1.7A and the Halo 2 up to 3A over USB-C, which is why BenQ puts a power adapter in the box with them. Plugging into the monitor's own USB port means the bar turns on and off with the screen. Controls range from touch buttons on the bar (BenQ ScreenBar, Quntis) to a wireless dial on the desk (Xiaomi, Halo 2), which is easier to reach if your monitor sits high or far back.
The picks, in detail
BenQ ScreenBar Pro LED Monitor Light Bar
Who it's for: Most small desks with a 24- to 32-inch monitor, especially if you want the light to manage itself.
The ScreenBar Pro is a newer, wider version of BenQ's original bar, and the one we'd pick for most desks. The bar is 19.7 inches (50 cm) wide, and BenQ lists it as lighting a 33.5" x 19.7" (85 x 50 cm) area at 500 lux, with more than 1,000 lux in the center from 19.7 inches up. That's enough to light the keyboard, mouse and a notebook on a typical small desk. The color rendering index is 95 or higher, and you can set color temperature from 2700K to 6500K and brightness from the touch buttons on the bar.
Its headline feature is an ultrasonic presence sensor: the light comes on when you sit within about two feet of the desk and turns off five minutes after you leave. It also auto-dims to the room. The redesigned clip fits monitors from 0.17 to 2.56 inches thick, the widest range here, and curved screens down to 1000R, and BenQ says it's shaped to stay clear of a webcam. It runs on USB-C (5V, up to 1.7A) with a 5.9-foot cable, and an adapter is included if your monitor's port can't supply that. On Amazon it's an Amazon's Choice item with 4.8 stars from about 1,300 ratings, sold by BenQ's own store.

- Lights 33.5" x 19.7" at 500 lux (BenQ figure)
- Presence sensor turns it on and off for you
- Fits monitors 0.17"–2.56" thick and 1000R curves

Check price at Amazon (opens in a new tab)Quntis ScreenLinear Computer Monitor Light Bar (Auto-Dimming, Touch)
Who it's for: Anyone who wants to try a light bar for the least money, on a flat monitor up to about 27 inches.
Quntis's ScreenLinear is listed as the #1 Best Seller in Amazon's USB Reading Lamps category, with a 4.6-star average from more than 13,800 ratings. It's a 15.7-inch bar with 78 LEDs, and Quntis says its asymmetric optics send the light down onto the desk rather than back at the screen. A built-in light sensor auto-dims it, aiming for about 900 lux on the desk, and touch controls on the bar adjust brightness and color temperature from 3000K to 6500K. Quntis lists a color rendering index of Ra98.
It runs on 5V USB at 5W and sits on a weighted clip. There are trade-offs at this price. Quntis's Amazon listing doesn't give a monitor thickness range, and in the review summary on Amazon, stability is the one area with mixed feedback: some owners say the clip doesn't sit firmly on their monitor. Check that your monitor's top edge is flat before ordering. The listing is sold by a third-party seller (ALPINE US) rather than Amazon or Quntis directly.
Pros
- Most reviews of any bar here (13,800+)
- Auto-dimming plus touch brightness and color
- 3000K–6500K, Ra98 (Quntis figure)

Who it's for: Smaller flat monitors and laptop stands with a slim top edge, where a 20-inch bar would overhang.
BenQ's original ScreenBar launched the category in 2017 and is still sold. At 17.7 inches (45 cm) wide it's sized for 22- to 24-inch monitors, and it runs on a plain USB-A port at 5V/1A, so it works off almost any monitor, laptop or phone charger. BenQ lists it as lighting a 23.6" x 11.8" (60 x 30 cm) area at 500 lux, with about 930 lux at the center from 17.7 inches up. That's a smaller pool of light than the Pro, but on a desk 30 to 40 inches wide it covers the keyboard and mouse.
It has an auto-dimming sensor, touch buttons on the bar and 2700K–6500K color, with a color rendering index above 95. The clip is the limitation: it fits monitors 0.4 to 1.2 inches thick, and curves of 1500R or flatter, and BenQ notes that some monitor back designs may not be compatible. Measure first. It has 4.7 stars from about 2,900 Amazon ratings and is sold by BenQ's store and shipped by Amazon.
Pros
- 17.7" bar suits 22"–24" screens
- USB-A 5V/1A: runs from nearly any port
- Auto-dimming; 2700K–6500K

Cons
- Narrowest monitor fit here (0.4"–1.2")

Who it's for: People with a tall or far-back monitor who don’t want to reach up to the bar to change settings.
Xiaomi's Mi Computer Monitor Light Bar is a 17.6-inch (448 mm) metal bar controlled by a separate 2.4 GHz wireless dial: press to switch on, turn for brightness, press and turn for color temperature (2700K–6500K). Holding the dial for two seconds jumps to a preset "computer mode" of warm light at half brightness. The head attaches magnetically and tilts up to 25 degrees, so you can angle the light away from the screen, and the mount fits monitors 1 to 32 mm (about 0.04 to 1.26 inches) thick, including curved screens.
It's powered by USB-C at 5V/1A and draws 5W. Xiaomi rates it at 270 lumens, a modest figure that suits a small desk and a single monitor. Two numbers differ by source: Xiaomi's US page gives a color rendering index of Ra90, while the Amazon listing says Ra95. It has 4.4 stars from about 6,300 Amazon ratings, but it's sold by a third-party seller and shipped by Amazon rather than sold by Xiaomi directly, and the remote takes AAA batteries.
Pros
- Wireless dial on the desk
- Magnetic head tilts up to 25° to avoid glare
- Fits monitors 1–32 mm thick, flat or curved
- 4.4 stars from 6,300 ratings
Cons
- Sold by a third-party seller on Amazon
- No auto-dimming sensor
- CRI differs between Xiaomi (Ra90) and Amazon (Ra95)

Check price at Amazon (opens in a new tab)BenQ ScreenBar Halo 2 LED Monitor Light Bar
Who it's for: People who work in the evening with the room lights low, and want the best controls.
The Halo 2 has the same 19.7-inch front light as the ScreenBar Pro (33.5" x 19.7" at 500 lux, CRI 95 or higher, 2700K–6500K) and adds a backlight that shines on the wall behind your monitor. That soft glow cuts the contrast between a bright screen and a dark room, which is when screens are hardest on the eyes. Front light and backlight are dimmed separately, from 0 to 100%.
It's controlled by a rechargeable wireless dial with a numeric display, which BenQ says lasts up to three months per charge, and it has the same presence sensor and auto-dimming as the Pro. The clip fits monitors 0.17 to 2.36 inches thick and 1000R–1800R curves. It draws the most power here (USB-C, up to 3A, 15W max), so it comes with an adapter. It's an Amazon's Choice item with 4.7 stars from about 1,300 ratings, sold by BenQ's store. It's also the most expensive bar here, so check the current price before deciding the backlight is worth it.
Pros
- Adds a wall backlight for dark rooms
- Wireless dial with display; front and back dimmed separately
- Presence sensor and auto-dimming
- Sold by BenQ on Amazon; 4.7 stars
Cons
- Most expensive bar here
- Needs a 3A USB-C port or the adapter

- Bar size
- 19.7" W (50 x 14.3 x 10.9 cm)
- Light coverage

A light bar lights a strip of desk in front of the screen and uses no desk space at all, which makes it the best first light for a desk that's mostly a monitor, keyboard and mouse. A desk lamp lights a bigger, more flexible area and can be aimed at papers, a sketchbook or a second work zone to the side. If you write or read on paper a lot, or use a laptop without an external monitor, a clamp or wall lamp is the better tool; our small desk lamps guide covers lamps that also leave the desktop clear. Plenty of people use both: the bar for screen work, a lamp for paper. Neither lights your face for video calls; that needs a small webcam light near the camera.
Setting up a light bar on a small desk
- Check the webcam first. If your webcam sits on top of the monitor, the bar and camera compete for the same edge. BenQ's newer clips are shaped to leave room, and BenQ sells a webcam accessory for the Pro and Halo 2 that mounts the camera on top of the bar.
- Use the monitor's USB port. The bar then turns on and off with the screen. Check the port's output against the bar's needs (1A for most, more for the Pro and Halo 2).
- Tilt the head, not the screen. If you see a reflection, adjust the bar's angle until it disappears. BenQ notes that glare usually means the clip isn't sitting level.
- Tidy the cable. Run the USB cable down the back of the monitor or arm with the rest; our cable management guide covers the rest of the desk.
Buying one as a present? A light bar is one of the picks in our home office gift ideas for small spaces, alongside other gifts that don't take up desk space.
FAQ
Are monitor light bars worth it on a small desk?
For screen work, yes: they light the keyboard and the desk in front of the monitor without using any desk space or causing screen glare. If you mostly work on paper, a clamp or wall desk lamp lights more of the desk.
Will a light bar fit my monitor?
Measure the thickness of the monitor’s top edge and check whether the back slopes away. The bars here fit ranges from 0.4"–1.2" (BenQ ScreenBar) to 0.17"–2.56" (ScreenBar Pro). Curved monitors need a bar rated for your curve, such as 1000R–1800R for the Pro and Halo 2.
Can I power a light bar from my monitor?
Usually. The original ScreenBar, Quntis and Xiaomi bars need a standard 5V USB port. The ScreenBar Pro (up to 1.7A) and Halo 2 (up to 3A) need a stronger USB-C port, which is why they come with an adapter.
Does a light bar work with a laptop?
These bars are built to hang on a monitor. Most laptop lids are too thin and light to hold the clip and its counterweight steadily, so for a laptop-only setup a small clamp lamp is usually the better choice.
Did you test these light bars?
No. We compared manufacturer specs and listings. See How We Research.
About this guide
We looked for monitor light bars sold to US buyers on Amazon with a 4.4-star average or better from at least 1,000 ratings, and preferred listings sold by the maker's own store. BenQ figures come from BenQ's US spec pages and BenQ's Amazon listings; Quntis figures and ratings from its Amazon listing; Xiaomi figures from Xiaomi's US product page, support FAQ and Amazon listing. All were retrieved on Oct. 14, 2026, and each product links to its source. Where a maker's site and Amazon listing disagree, we say so. We did not test these bars hands-on and don't publish star ratings of our own.
