A folding desk gives you a real desk when you need one and a clear floor when you don't. Most fold down to under 3 inches thick, so they slide behind a door, under a bed or beside the fridge, and none of them need a wall or any drilling. That makes them a good fit for renters, guest rooms and anyone who works from home a few days a week.

We picked three freestanding folding desks in different sizes, compared on footprint, folded thickness, weight and setup. We haven't tested these hands-on. Specs come from each Amazon listing, checked on Oct. 24, 2026, and every pick has a video showing the same model and finish we link. If you'd rather mount a desk on the wall, our wall-mounted and fold-down desks guide covers those. This guide is part of our desks for small spaces series; for planning the rest of the room, see how to set up a small home office.

TL;DR: Our top picks

  1. Best full-size folding desk: Huuger Folding Desk for Small Spaces, 39.4" (Check current price). A 39.4 x 18.9-inch top with a bottom shelf that still folds to 2.76 inches thick.
  2. Best no-assembly folding desk: GreenForest Folding Desk No Assembly, 2-Tier (Check current price). Arrives assembled, unfolds in seconds and adds a shelf along the back for a phone, lamp or notebooks.
  3. Best narrow folding desk: WOHOMO Folding Desk, 31.5" (Check current price). Only 15.75 inches deep and 31.5 inches wide, at 14.96 lb, with a 200 lb rating on its listing.

How to choose a folding desk for a small space

1. Measure where it will stand and where it will hide

A folding desk needs two spots: the one where you work and the one where you store it. Measure the floor space for the open desk plus about 36 inches behind it for your chair. Then measure the storage spot. All three picks fold to under 3 inches thick (the Huuger and WOHOMO list 2.76 inches), but they're still as wide and as tall as the open desk, so check the gap behind your door or beside the fridge.

2. Pick a width for what goes on it

A laptop and a mouse fit on about 28 inches. The GreenForest (27.3 inches) and WOHOMO (31.5 inches) are laptop desks. For a monitor and keyboard, or a laptop with papers spread out, go for the 39.4-inch Huuger. All three come in more than one size, so you can size up or down within the same design.

3. Depth matters more than you think

A shallow desk takes less of the room, but it puts a laptop screen close to your face and leaves little room for your wrists. The WOHOMO is 15.75 inches deep, which suits a laptop only. The Huuger's 18.9 inches is enough for a small monitor. The GreenForest is 22 inches deep including its back shelf.

4. Assembly once, or none at all

“Folding” doesn't always mean “no assembly.” The GreenForest arrives assembled; you just unfold it. The Huuger and the WOHOMO need to be put together once with the included tools (Huuger says about 20 minutes), and after that they fold and unfold without tools. If you'll move the desk often, weight matters too: the WOHOMO is the lightest here at 14.96 pounds.

5. Check the height

Standard desk height is 28 to 30 inches. The Huuger (29.7 inches) and WOHOMO (29.52 inches) are in that range. None of the three adjust, so if you're shorter, plan on a keyboard tray or a footrest, and if you want to sit and stand, see our small standing desks instead.

Video: KG Simple Reviews on YouTube. An independent review of the rustic brown 39-inch Huuger desk we link.

Who it's for: People who want a desk big enough for a monitor and keyboard that can still be folded away on weekends.

Huuger's folding desk is the most desk-like of the three. The 39.4-inch size we link has a 39.4 x 18.9-inch top at 29.7 inches high, with a curved front edge and a shelf near the floor for books or a bin. Steel legs and an X-shaped brace keep it steady, according to the listing, and it folds down to 2.76 inches thick to slide behind a door or under a bed. It weighs 9.82 kg (about 21.6 pounds).

It does need assembly once; Huuger says about 20 minutes with the included tools, and some buyers recommend a power screwdriver. Huuger also sells it in 23.6-, 31.5- and 47.2-inch widths and five finishes. The video is an independent review of the rustic brown 39-inch desk we link.

  • Big 39.4" x 18.9" top
  • Folds to 2.76" thick
  • Bottom shelf for storage

Best no-assembly folding desk

GreenForest Folding Desk No Assembly, 2-Tier

Video: Happy Office on YouTube. A short review showing how the two-tier GreenForest desk unfolds, in the dark espresso finish.

Who it's for: People who want to open the box and start working, and like a shelf to keep the desktop clear.

GreenForest's two-tier folding desk comes fully assembled. You pull the legs open and it's ready, with no tools or hardware. The top is 27.3 inches wide and 22 inches deep, and a raised shelf runs along the back for a phone, a small lamp or a stack of notebooks, so the work surface stays clear. The listing gives 31.9 inches as the overall height (with the shelf) and an 88-pound weight limit.

It's the smallest top here, so it suits a laptop and a mouse rather than a monitor setup. Folded, it's flat enough to lean against a wall or slide under a bed, but it's about 18 pounds. The link goes to the listing in the video's own description; Amazon now groups it with other finishes (black, brown, oak, walnut and white) and a larger 30-inch size, and the video shows the dark espresso desk.

Pros

  • No assembly at all
  • Built-in back shelf
  • 22" deep including the shelf

Cons

  • Smallest top (27.3" wide)
  • 88 lb weight limit
  • About 18 lb to move

Best narrow folding desk

WOHOMO Folding Desk, 31.5"

Video: Happyrider on YouTube. A one-minute look at the oak-and-white WOHOMO desk, including assembly and folding.

Who it's for: People with a narrow strip of wall, like the end of a bed or a hallway, who work on a laptop.

WOHOMO's folding desk is the one to get when depth is the problem. It's 31.5 inches wide but only 15.75 inches deep, at 29.52 inches high, so it fits beside a bed or in a hallway where a deeper desk would block the path. Nylon buckles under the top hold the legs open, and two triangular plates stiffen the frame. It weighs 14.96 pounds, folds to 2.76 inches thick, and its Amazon listing gives a 200-pound maximum weight.

It needs one-time assembly with the included tools. At 15.75 inches deep it's a laptop desk; a monitor would sit too close. WOHOMO also sells 39.4- and 47.2-inch versions and several colors. The video is a short look at the oak-top, white-frame desk we link, including assembly and folding.

Pros

  • Only 15.75" deep
  • Lightest here (14.96 lb)
  • 200 lb max weight (listing)

Cons

  • Too shallow for a monitor
  • Needs one-time assembly
  • No shelf

What about Murphy desks?

A Murphy desk is a desk that folds down from the wall, the same idea as a Murphy bed. When it's closed, it's a shallow cabinet or panel a few inches deep; when you lower the front, it becomes a desktop held up by the wall. Unlike the desks above, it has to be screwed into the wall (ideally into studs), so it takes no floor space at all but isn't something you can move to another room. We cover them, with measurements and picks, in our wall-mounted and fold-down desks guide.

Which folding desk for which spot

Make a folding desk work every day

If you set the desk up and take it down often, keep everything that lives on it in one box or bin so it all goes away together. A clip-on light saves table space; our small desk lamps guide has several. And if you find the desk stays open all week, it may be time for a permanent one: our desks for small spaces and small L-shaped desks guides cover compact fixed options.

FAQ

Are folding desks sturdy enough for everyday work?

For a laptop, a monitor and a keyboard, yes, as long as the legs are fully locked and the floor is level. Check the weight limit: the GreenForest is listed at 88 pounds and the WOHOMO at 200 pounds, while Huuger does not list one for its desk.

How thin do folding desks get when folded?

The Huuger and WOHOMO desks in this guide both list 2.76 inches folded. The GreenForest also folds flat but its listing does not give a folded thickness.

What is the difference between a folding desk and a Murphy desk?

A folding desk is freestanding: its legs fold so you can store it and move it anywhere. A Murphy desk is mounted on the wall and folds down from it, so it takes no floor space but stays in one place. See our wall-mounted desks guide for those.

Do folding desks need assembly?

Some do and some don’t. The GreenForest in this guide arrives assembled. The Huuger and WOHOMO need to be put together once with the included tools; after that they fold and unfold without tools.

What size folding desk do I need for a laptop?

About 28 inches wide and 16 inches deep fits a laptop and a mouse. The GreenForest (27.3 inches) and WOHOMO (31.5 inches) are laptop-size. For a monitor, go for something 39 inches wide and at least 18 inches deep, like the Huuger.

Did you test these folding desks?

No. We compared the Amazon listings and watched each product video. See How We Research.

About this guide

We looked for freestanding folding desks sold to US buyers, each with a real product video that shows the same model and finish we link. Specs come from each product's Amazon listing, retrieved on Oct. 24, 2026. We left out two desks from our first shortlist, a Coavas 39.4-inch folding desk and the Amazon Basics 40-inch foldable desk, because both Amazon listings were currently unavailable when we checked. For the GreenForest, we link the listing named in its video's description. Wall-mounted, floating and fold-down wall desks are covered in a separate guide, and lap desks for the bed or couch in another. We did not test these products hands-on and don't publish star ratings of our own.
